Seasonal Maintenance Tips

Living in a 4-season country means maintaining your home through various weather conditions throughout the year. Here are some of the best things you can do each season to help keep your home in tip-top shape.

Spring:

It's important to check the exterior of your home in spring after the harsh chill of winter. It’s also a good time to fix outdoor issues before it gets too hot.

  • Check for any damage to the roof such as missing shingles
  • Clean out the gutters and downspouts to prevent water damage
  • Check for any cracks in the concrete and fill them
  • Remove debris from your yard and perform continuous yard maintenance
  • Apply fresh paint to exterior surfaces if needed

Spring is also the time for spring cleaning, of course! There are many inside fixes you can make while cleaning:

  • Change HVAC filters
  • Check for pests or areas where pests could enter the home and seal them off
  • Drain your hot water heater
  • Vacuum refrigerator coils

Summer:

Most people will want to be out enjoying the warm weather during the summer months, so just do some occasional maintenance on the exterior of your home to keep it in good shape.

  • Pool maintenance: Remove debris from your pool and vacuum weekly, check pH balance, clean the skimmer and pump basket, and brush walls, steps, and ladders
  • Re-seal wooden decks if necessary
  • Power wash your home’s exterior and driveway

There are some interior things you should do in the summer to maintain home comfort as well:

  • Ensure windows and doors are properly sealed to avoid losing cool air
  • Clean windows, inside and out
  • Check that your AC is functioning properly and clean the filter

Fall:

Like spring, fall can be a great time to do outdoor work since it’s not as hot as the summer months.

  • Close up your pool for the season
  • Check your roof for loose or missing shingles if you didn’t in the spring
  • Cover and store any patio furniture you won’t be keeping outside

Certain indoor tasks should also be done in fall to ensure a smooth winter.

  • Have your heating system inspected and filters replaced if necessary
  • Check that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly
  • Consider having your chimney cleaned

Winter:

Winter is a month where you should be fairly set to hunker down, provided that you’ve been maintaining your home throughout the rest of the year. Still, there are a couple of things you can do or keep your eye out for:

  • Shovel or snow blow to maintain clear pathways
  • Check to see if your home is well insulated and add insulation to places if necessary
  • Drain any faucets outside to prevent pipe freezing With these seasonal home tips, you can be sure that your house will be comfortable all year long!
