Cottage Tips: Creating the Perfect Outdoor Space

There’s nothing like enjoying the warm summer weather by the water at your cottage–after all, Canadian cottages are known for their spectacular views. It’s likely that you spend plenty of time outdoors during your summer cottage stays, so why not make the most of your space? A well-designed outdoor area can enhance your cottage experience (and your cottage’s value!).

Natural Landscaping

Landscaping at your cottage can be very different than at your year-round home. Many cottages are in rural areas that are surrounded by trees and native plants, and it’s great to keep it that way! You’re likely at the cottage to relax and don’t want to be spending all of your time on lawn care.

If you want to landscape your outdoor area, stick to flowers and plants that are native to the area so that it blends with nature. Perennial plants that return every year are another great choice, as they don’t require a ton of maintenance.

You can also enhance the space by putting down stone walkways or adding hedges or trellises for a little added privacy.

Enhance Waterfront Access

If your cottage is on the water, the shoreline can be treated as an extension of your outdoor space. The waterfront is a great place to add Muskoka chairs, loungers, a patio umbrella, and even some speakers if you want to enjoy music.

A dock can also be more than just a space to launch your boat. Floating mats, ladders, or even a kayak/canoe rack can improve the space. Consider installing solar-powered lights along the sides of the dock to keep things well-lit at night.

Functional features like storage solutions are another great addition, as they can keep life jackets, toys, towels, and all other water necessities organized.

Add a Cozy Fire Pit

A fire pit is a cottage essential! There’s nothing like enjoying the warmth from a fire on a cool night under a starry sky, or roasting marshmallows after an active day in the water. Your fire pit could be anything from a traditional stone ring to a more modern gas unit. Surround the pit with some comfy chairs and you’re ready to get roasting!

Consider an Outdoor Kitchen

Many might think of an elaborate setup when they hear “outdoor kitchen”, but an outdoor kitchen doesn’t need to be too fancy (or costly). Setting up a grill, bar fridge, and seating area can make for a very cozy outdoor kitchen area.

Include Shade Options

The heat of summer can be both draining and dangerous, so ensure your cottage is well equipped with a variety of shady spaces. You can create nicely shaded areas with a pergola, umbrella, or rely on the natural shade of the trees.

It’s important to spread out shady areas around your cottage so that you and your family or guests always have options when it comes to staying cool.

Curating a comfortable and usable outdoor space will not only boost your cottage’s enjoyment, but also its value. If you’re ever selling your cottage, potential buyers will look at the seamless indoor-outdoor living setup as a lifestyle that they’re investing in. For you and your family, the outdoor space is a great place to create long-lasting memories.
